Top 10 sci-fi Bollywood movies- Bollywood is filled with romance and why not, Everyone wants to be loved and love someone. While romantic movies are a weakness for any Cinephiles, a mix of genres is not bad either. In Hindi Film Industry, few innovative filmmakers did try making some really inventive and out-of-the-box movies. Today, we will look at the list of the top 10 sci-fi Bollywood movies made in Bollywood.
While Bollywood isn’t really a match in this genre with its deadly competitor Hollywood. Films like Inception or Gravity are still much more evolved in both terms of filmmaking and technology. Yet, our choices of sci-fi Bollywood movies Bollywood Films might startle you because in filmmaking it is the emotions that matter. Below are the films that made us curious and touched our hearts.
PK (2004) Director – Rajkumar Hirani
Rajukumar Hirani’s directorial film PK has a spectacular cast. It showcases Aamir in the lead role of an alien who came from outer space, gets stuck on Earth when someone steals his communication device, the only way he could return home. Through his innocent but logical questions he makes people reevaluate their blinding faith on religion.
The film also stars beautiful Anushka Sharma, Sanjay Dutt, and super talented Boman Irani.
Mr. India (1987) Director – Shekhar Kapur
Shekhar Kapur is few of the gems of our Cinematic World. His directed film, Mr. India starring Anil Kapoor is one of those movies from our childhood that is hard to forget. We are still in nostalgia of the great villain Mogambo played by Amrish Puri.
Mr. India is about a generous man who takes in orphans into his home, but they are at a risk from an inhuman villain. He saves them all using his scientist’s father’s invisibility device.
The movie also stars beautiful and super talented Sridevi.
Carbon: The short story of tomorrow (2017) Director – Maitrey Bajpai, Ramiz Ilham Khan
A new to the list but highly impactful, Carbon is set in the future, in the year 2067, when oxygen is scarce and pollution is predominant. A man with an artificial heart gets into trouble when he signs up for an illegal oxygen deal.
The film stars an exceptional actor of our Hindi Film Industry, Mr Nawazuddin Siddiqui. It also casts Jackky Bhagnani and Prachi Desai in the lead roles.
Shree (2013) Director – Rajesh Bachchani
We saw a phase in Bollywood when TV Actors tried to break out from the small screen and made their way to the silver screen. Rajeev Khandelwal and Hussain Kuwajerwal are two prominent names in that list of actors.
Shree starring Hussain Kuwajerwal follows a common man named Shree. He works in a telecom company and wants to marry Sonu but lacks financial stability. In order to make more money in less time he trades 12 hours of his life for an experiment in exchange of 20 lakhs, only to find that the experiment has turned his life upside down.
The film also stars Anjali Patil and Shivani Tanksale in the lead roles.
Koi Mil Gaya (2003) Director – Rakesh Roshan
While the film is a complete rip-off of Hollywood film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, the series created by Rakesh Roshan through this film, was quite interesting. The film marks the debut of Bollywood’s own superhero, Krrish.
Koi Mil Gaya follows a developmentally disabled boy, Rohit, who tries to talk to extraterrestrial creatures from outer space using his late scientist father’s device. Little did he know that this would change his life forever.
The film stars Hrithik Roshan, Rekha, and Preity Zinta in the lead roles.
Robot (2010) Director – S. Shankar
Is there anything Rajnikanth can’t do? Na. At the age when most actors take the backseat or choose more subtle characters, Rajnikanth refuses to follow the lot. In the film, Robot he plays the double role of both the destructive robot and it’s inventor, Vaseegran. This is one of those films that took Bollywood by fire, and it was only because of the stardom of Rajnikanth.
The film follows Vaseegran, a brilliant scientist who puts in years of effort to finally make a humanoid robot that can save mankind. To further enhance it, he programs human emotions into it, only to find that the robot switches sides towards the end.
Ra One (2011) Director – Anubhav Sinha
Before turning into a filmmaker portraying the social evils of society, Anubhav Sinha tried exploring his fantasy or ambition, whatever Ra One was. Though the film failed miserably due to its weak script and weaker direction, the special effects and scientific visualization in the film were commendable. It also gave Shahrukh Khan, the king of Bollywood to play a superhero, something he always wanted to do.
Ra One is about gameplay gone wrong. The antagonist of an action game comes to life and threatens the world and the inventor of the game. It is when the hero or the protagonist of the game is brought to life to take charge and save the creator’s family.
Both the creator of the game and it’s protagonist is played by Shahrukh Khan. The antagonist is played by the super sexy Arjun Rampal. Kareena Kapoor is an integral part of the film
Krrish (2006) Director – Rakesh Roshan
Sequel to the 2005 film, Koi Mil Gaya, the first film in the series sets the base for an upcoming superhero called Krrish.
Happening after the events of the original film, Krrish follows a Rohit’s son, a young, ordinary boy living in a small village who goes to Singapore for his love, but realizes that he could save lives using his superpowers, thus evolving into a masked superhero Krrish.
Mr. X in Bombay (1964) Director – Shantilal Soni
This is one of my most favorite films in the list of Top 10 sci-fi Bollywood movies. Reasons being, it stars a spectacular and multi talented Kishore Kumar. Mr. X in Bombay is a hidden gem from the black and white era of the Hindi film industry. The song Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi performed by Kishore Kumar still rings our heart.
The film follows a scientist who gets into trouble when a failed experiment of his leads to his employee Manohar’s death. The plot explores his struggle to save himself and prove his innocence.
Love Story 2050 Director – Harry Baweja
Not the best film in the lot but that’s all Bollywood has, a series of failed experiments. The film stars Harman Baweja trying to trick the audience as an incarnation of living Hrithik Roshan. But, we don’t see the incarnation anymore.
Love Story 2050 portrays a heartbroken Karan whose girlfriend dies in a car accident. In order to bring her back, he goes into the future with the help of his uncle’s time machine.
The film also stars beautiful Priyanka Chopra and supertalend Boman Irani who were both wasted in the film.
No list is perfect and that is the ultimate truth. Bollywood isn’t famous for making sci-fi movies and thus, it is hard to sort out a list of the same genre. But that also gives us a chance to highlight the few movies and filmmakers who tried to break the monotonous creativity of our industry.
This list is dedicated to their efforts and an appeal to other makers to delight their audience with something more inventive and innovative rather than the plain and done-to-death rom-com.
We might have missed a few titles and if you have a suggestion, do tell us in the comment below. We would love to replace Harman Baweja’s film from the list as soon as possible.
